African American Senators

In the nearly 235-year history of the U.S. Senate, only 14 Black senators have served. I have met all nine elected since Reconstruction, as well as the two who were appointed, and I look forward to meeting Laphonza Butler. Please click the “Show More” tab under Senator Cowan’s photo.

Only three African Americans have ever been elected governor in U.S. history.
